Build for Android

Mekkapp builds your app into a file an Android phone installs, on your own Expo account. It is free on Expo’s free plan, within its monthly allowance.

Before you start

A free Expo account, made on expo.dev.

The app’s Android ID, saved in Settings → Publishing, under The app’s ID in each store. It can’t change once the app is in a store, so choose it with care: a reversed address such as com.yourname.shop.

Connect Expo

  1. On expo.dev, open Account settings → Access tokens, and make a token.
  2. In Mekkapp, open Settings → Install on a phone, paste it under Access token, and press Connect.
  3. Mekkapp keeps the token encrypted and uses it only to send this app’s builds. Disconnect deletes it.

Build it

  1. Under Android, press Build the app.
  2. It says Getting your app ready, then Building on Expo. It takes several minutes, longer when Expo’s free queue is busy; you can leave the page.
  3. When it says Ready to install, press Download the app (APK) on the phone, or scan the code with it.

Install it

Android asks once to allow installs from your browser or your files app: allow it, then open the file.

The download link works for a while; Settings says until when.

Good to know

Expo’s free plan allows 15 Android builds a month, one at a time, on a slower queue.

Expo builds the same code Download the code gives you.

Not possible yet

  • An iPhone build: it needs an Apple developer account, and isn’t here yet. You can build for iPhone yourself from the downloaded code.
  • Publishing to Google Play or the App Store.
